Schools trio in area football final
YOUNG footballers from Hawsker, East Whitby and Stakesby represented the Whitby area in the Whitby and Ryedale under 11 boys primary football festival at Lady Lumley's.
For the first time, so many primary schools from the Whitby area entered this event that it had to be held at two separate venues.
Eight larger schools – Stakesby, Airy Hill, East Whitby, Sleights, Ruswarp, Seton, Lythe and West Cliff – played each other at Stakesby, with two to go through to represent Whitby at the area final.
Four smaller schools – Hawsker, Glaisdale/Goathland, Lealholm and Danby – played each other on the Astroturf at Caedmon with one to represent Whitby at the final.
Both competitions turned out to be incredibly competitive. At the larger schools' tournament, the teams were split into two groups of four and only one goal was scored in each semi-final.
The final between East Whitby and Stakesby was a goal-less draw as was the third place play-off between Airy Hill and West Cliff – this is a reflection of the high standard of football on show throughout the afternoon.
At Caedmon, the smaller schools each played each other twice – again it turned out to be a tight competition with Hawsker narrowly beating Danby to first place by only one point.
Twelve young leaders from Whitby Community College were spread between the two venues – refereeing, score keeping and helping to look after the youngsters and their work was much appreciated.
School sports co-ordinator Pete Woolley said: "What a fantastic afternoon of football. All of the games at Stakesby were played with an excellent spirit.
"The lads were ultra competitive and their skills were a testament to the excellent network of youth coaches that we have in the Whitby area both at clubs and within schools."
The final positions at the partnership final were –
1) Norton Primary – who will go through to represent the partnership at the county final
2) Pickering Juniors
3=) Stakesby and East Whitby (no goal scored in their decider)
5) Gillamoor Primary School
6) Sinnington Primary School
7) Hawsker Primary School
8)Welburn Primary.
All teams put in a great deal of effort and represented Whitby well. Many thanks to all of the teachers and parents who gave up their time to take them through.
