Under-strength Quins in good spirits, despite loss

Whitby Harlequins travelled up to Seaton Carew with a full squad plus four subs for what was always to be expected one of the hardest fixtures of the season.

Whitby were missing several key members Mick Latus and Darrin Wright.

The game started badly for Whitby when strong running from Seaton, returning a poor clearance, led to their first try.

This was soon after centre Neil Purves had to leave the field of play for treatment to a leg injury veteran.

Jim Fountain came on to hopefully shore up the visitors’ defence.

Seaton were once again on the scoresheet when a handling error cost Whitby dearly. Seaton Carew’s big pack took a quick penalty and crashed over the tryline.

Whitby had a bit of a fightback before half-time when pack leader Jock Harrison bulldozed his way over.

However, Seaton were soon back, scoring two quick tries before half-time.

Whitby brought Tim Richardson and Purves back on but once again Seaton started well and were soon over the line when their pacey winger slipped over.

Whitby managed to get one more try in the last quarter when Matt Coomber powered over but overall the ‘Quins were well beaten by a good side and was it not for some great covering tackling from youngsters Alex Taylor, Tom Steyer, Guy Taylor and Lee Herbert, the score could have been worse.

Manager Andy Taylor gave man of the match to scrum half John Haydon who ran all afternoon and said he also thought second row Bruce Reed had a fine game.

With both the firsts and the Quins losing, it was decided to have bus pub crawl back to Whitby to raise the team’s spirits. Both sets of players set about this task with gusto.
