Rusty U16s succumb to heavy loss

PLAYING their first game since October, Whitby turned in a disappointing rusty performance against a team they beat at the start of the season.

Acklam put their visitors under pressure from kick-off and did not take long to register their first score from a rolling maul.

Whitby looked as though they were waking up when centre Chris Reaveley put in a good run and kick deep into the home team 22.

Scrum half Jan Jacobs was halted by a determined Acklam defence.

However, they never looked like sustaining this and conceded a penalty which Acklam took quickly and ran the length of the pitch to score.

The home team then tested Whitby with a good handling move by their backs to register a further score out wide.

Things were looking ominous for Whitby as weak tackling allowed the home side yet another score to give for an unassailable lead of 33-0 at half-time.

Following a strong lecture from the Whitby coaches and a change in tactics, the U16s showed some improvement with strong runs from wingers Dan Shaw and Aiden Smythe.

Acklam were well in control and responded with a further try which they converted.

Whitby’s forwards began to pick and drive the ball forward and gain more territory which resulted in Max Crossling capitalising on good work by the forwards to register Whitby’s first score.

Further poor Whitby tackling allowed the Acklam full back to run through them yet again to counter the Whitby score.

At last, Whitby began to show some competitive spirit with a number of good individual runs that culminated in prop Leo Ward using his strength to force his way over the line from short range.

As Whitby tired though lack of fitness, they conceded a 5m scrum from which Acklam scored to give them a comfortable victory.

The lack of training and games showed through in Whitby’s performance with many basic handling and tackling errors and lack of togetherness gained by playing week in, week out.

Training sessions are held every Friday evening at 6.30pm and Sunday morning at 10.30am.

It is really important that players realise that they all have to practise to make things better during matches.

Dan Shaw took the man of the match award for some strong running and putting in some good tackles.
