York Potash, the company proposing to build a new potash mine between Whitby and Scarborough, has become the proud sponsors of Whitby Rugby Club’s U15s team.

The £1,400 sponsorship deal has seen the side receive new kit, which features the York Potash logo on the front, as well as new post covers and corner flags.

The U15s, who have only tasted defeat on three occasions this season, will be showing off their new sponsored kit in their match against Ripon on Sunday 19 February.

Whitby Rugby Club, which runs two senior teams and six junior teams, has also used the sponsorship money to pay for new flags and post protectors, to be used in all home games.

Michael Crossling, a coach at Whitby Rugby Club, said: “We are very grateful for York Potash’s support.

“It is fantastic that a business like this is showing its commitment to the local community by sponsoring a local team.

“People often don’t realise the cost of running a club like ours and this sponsorship has made a real difference.”

Gareth Edmunds, head of external affairs at York Potash, added: “We are delighted to be able to help Whitby Rugby Club and as a company we’re keen to help the local community where we can.

“We are proud to be associated with the good work at the club and wish them luck in extending their winning run.”

Yes. Meanwhile, congratulations to the Club on securing this deal. Healthy age group teams will lead to a stronger first team, and can only be good for Whitby rugby.

@ putting things straight -- when you state "York Potash are trying to show the local community that they are here to help." I think you need to live in the real world, the bottom line is that York Potash are here to make a profit for the company and their shareholders, and thats the top and bottom of it all.

I take it then that "whitby underground" nevers reads papers, watches tv or ever looks at any type of advert. All adverts work on the consumers sub concious. They are all trying to get you to buy their product. In my opinion York Potash are trying to show the local community that they are here to help. Yes there are massive questions to be answered but can we really afford to standstill and never look at alternatives to tourism. If managed correctly the mine could become a tourist attraction in its own right. It doesnt have to be visible like Boulby is. Remember that site is over 40 years old. Coming back to subject, if you didnt react to any advertising we would still be in a cave wearing rags.

This on the face of it is a great story and yes the sponsorship is great news and very welcome. However on the wider front this is York Potash looking to win the hearts and minds of Whitby folk in seeing York Potash as a force for good in the area. In the end this is really is a cynical act to win over Whitby towards ensuring York Potash win their goal for extracting potash in the area. Something which the area as a whole needs to decide and act on from future consultation, good or bad, jobs, income, environment, countryside impact or otherwise.. I am just starting to see a campaign starting from York Potash where they are working on our sub conscious. I don’t like it one bit.
