Injuries leave back row sparse

WHITBY rugby fans have their first chance in a while to see the Maroons in action on Saturday (8 Dec) at the Showfield, as they prepare to take on Washington.

The Maroons’ mounting injury count with long-term casualties Dusty Hare, Anthony Craig and Andy Grady are probably out, allied to the expected unavailability of Nick Beaumont, Jack Grady and James Newton means the back row area is looking sparse.

On the plus side, it is hoped influential no 8 Tristan Pottas can recover in time and the exciting Joe Lenton returns from holiday.

The evergreen Richard Harrison and Tim Richardson are on standby.

This will be Whitby’s last home game before Christmas, with the next fixture at White Leys being on 12 January against Houghton le Spring.

In between, they face two tricky looking away matches at Chester Le Street and Yarm.

Coach Darryl Grason said: “One of the biggest mistakes we can make is underestimating the opposition.

“This Saturday, we will make sure our attitude is right and that we earn the right to play.

“We are gradually improving, but I would still like to see us 2O per cent fitter so we can play 15-man entertaining rugby and unlock our undoubted potential.”

Training continues every Tuesday on the Showfield and every Thursday on the round town run, both at 7pm.

Saturday’s game kicks off at 2.15pm.

This weekend’s fixture list throws up some interesting games with unbeaten leaders Hartlepool BBOB facing a tricky match at improving Chester Le Street.

Fifth-placed Houghton take on South Tyneside College in what promises to be a tight clash, while Yarm entertain bottom place Richmond.
