Roe wins £5,000 in Whitby angling festival
ANGLER Mick Roe's enormous ling held out to win the £5,000 jackpot in the Whitby Charter Skippers' Association's summer angling festival.
Mick landed the 26lb 2oz whopper in the first week of the festival and held out for more than a fortnight to win the big prize.
Simon England came second with a 24lb 9oz ling caught a week last Friday to capture the 2,000 second prize while the penultimate day saw Martin Ormerod take third with his 21lb 12oz ling.
Secretary Mick Leonard said: "Mick's 26lb fish was going to take some beating.
"It looks to be the heaviest fish that's won a festival for the past five years.
He hailed the festival a roaring success.
"We've had some great weather and only lost two days at the beginning.
"There's been a lot of fish caught and a lot of fish weighed in and the competition was wide open – anyone could have win it."
