Pat bowls first wood for Sleights
Sleights Bowling Club held their opening day of the new season recently when president Pat Perry bowled the traditional first wood.
Also a cheque for 1,010 was handed to Ken Wielding, for the Great North Air Ambulance, which the club had raised during the previous year as its chosen charity.
The club held its first friendly match, against Burniston, which Sleights won.
Sleights beat Burniston at home 107-87. S Harrison, J Moore, O Tordoff, J Blythman won 21-11.
T Bogg, B Lawson, M Wade, C Cowen won 13-12.
C Gray, P Perry, D Welford, C Shardlow won 22-14.
E Sanderson, JR Moore, D Metcalfe, L Campbell won 22-13.
J Pybus/F Lawson, I Pearson, H.Brown lost 12-17.
T Reid, D Marshall, F Bogg lost 17-20.
Sleights played Marske away in the first leg of the competition for the Ellie Hillyard Trophy.
Marske were the winners as last year, but with an increased margin, of 132 points, to Sleights' 100.
The home leg is later in the year.
Sleights scores: J Weatherall, P Perry, O Tordoff, B.McLean won 24-18.
C Gray, L White, JR Moore, C Shardlow won 22-19.
T Reid, J Moore, M Wade, E Clark lost 18-22.
T Bogg, M Swalwell, D Marshall, Be Raw won 18-12.
F Lawson, B Raw, D Metcalfe, J Blythman lost 13-33.
E White, R Clark, I Pearson, F Bog lost 7-28.
The Annual Captain's Pairs Competition, where members choose their own partner, was held at Sleights Bowling Club, with 19 teams entered.
There was some excellent bowling throughout the day.
Semi-finalists were Steve Harrison with Eric Sanderson against Eddie and Lucy White and Mike Harper with Olive Tordoff against Colin Gray with Joyce Blythman.
The final was between Eddie and Lucy against Mike and Olive, with Eddie and Lucy White winning the Captain's Pairs Trophy.
