Parkin holds off close challenge

THE second Mulgrave Run was held on Sunday in conditions which were cold, wet and foggy – a far contrast from the previous day when organisers marking out the course were complaining about the heat.

The course, prizes, facilities and refreshments – provided by the ladies of the Mulgrave Community Sports – are the best in the area for a multi-terrain event and yet the number of entrants was disappointingly low.

Organiser hope the ones who competed will spread the word to their club members as they believe the race warrants a greater number of entrants.

Visibility was down to about 100m at the finish of the senior event and in a very close race, Dave Parkin just held off newcomer Paul Butler to win by 12 seconds, the winning time being 56 mins 40.

Making a clean sweep for Loftus and Whitby Athletics Club, Rob Williamson continued his good run of form by finishing in third place in 1hr 00 mins 40.

In the ladies race, Angharad Owen retained her title, finishing ninth overall in a time of 1-07.42.

She was followed by Sue Haslam (1-11.05) from Scarborough who is a regular winner in the local fell races.

Third woman was Sue Milburn from Newton Aycliffe 1-15.37.

The team prizes were both won by Loftus and Whitby Athletics Club with Dave Parkin, Paul Butler, Rob Williamson and Steve Hardy and the ladies trio being Angharad Owen, Julia Jackson and Susan Dick.

Cliff Dove (78) completed the 14.1 km course in 1-51.49.

The junior races preceded the senior race with Alice Hoggarth winning the under 11s race, closely followed by Maddie Mastrolonardo and Aidan Duell.

In the U17 race, Nathan Parkin was first, Shane Hicks second and Dani Braithwaite third.
