Eskdale School runner tops county fixture
AN ESKDALE School runner carried on her winning streak in the North Yorkshire Schools Cross Country at King James School, Knaresborough.
Harvey Clacherty (12th) and Tilly Adamski (1st) set the standard for all to follow in the year seven race with Tilly carrying on her winning streak from the district rounds. Both runners have huge potential to go far in the sport.
The junior girls’ race was a tight affair with runners jostling for positions throughout. Eventually Maddalena Mastrolonardo (25th) secured a place in the top 25, proving her ever resilience.
Adam Lewis (40th) and Callum Halley (12th) finished of the day and represented the school in the junior boys race.
The year nine boys were content to be part of the large leading group on the ever-increasing rutted course before late challengers timed there finishes to perfection.
After managing top 10 places in the three Scarborough and district races held before Christmas, Eskdale had five pupils representing the district team in year seven races and the junior boys and girls races.
After recent heavy rain and the meeting being cancelled previously due to the weather, parts of the course were soft and sticky, giving runners a real test and a taste of the real cross-country season.
The cold, north-east breeze and damp conditions made life chilly for officials, supporters and spectators.
Due to their success, four of Eskdale’s runners were picked for the next round.
In the minor boys’ race Harvey Clacherty (33rd) found the going tough against some experienced runners and in the minor girls’ race Tilly Adamski’s (6th) outstanding pacing secured her a top 10 finish.
Maddalena (32nd) and Callum (26th) both found the next step tough but finishing in the top 30 at this level is a huge achievement.
Eskdale School’s PE department thank parents for their continued support. Well done to all five athletes, who have worked hard to progress in a sport that is so challenging due to an ever-changing climate and thanks to the hosts and Pete Lamb for all his efforts.
