Danby pupils give long-serving head a great send-off

IN Olympic year, whitby community college held two indoor olympic events for the local area primary schools.

Volunteer Level Two Leaders who attend training at an after school club welcomed children from some of the smaller primary schools – St Hilda’s, Goathland, Glaisdale, Lealholm, Egton and Danby.

The following day, Level 2 BTEC students welcomed children from larger primary schools – Sleights, Airy Hill, Ruswarp, East Whitby, Stakesby and Lythe.

On both days children competed in field events such as the vertical jump, long jump, triple jump, speed bounce, chest push and foam javelin; there was also various track events including relays and an obstacle relay.

Sports co-ordinator Pete Woolley said: “We had two really good days of fierce competition.

“It was great to see children demonstrating accomplished technique in some tricky events such as the triple jump as well as running their hearts out in the relays.

“Danby School kindly lent Goathland some boys in each of the running events which was a super sporting gesture.

“I was extremely proud of the young leaders from the college who ensured that events ran smoothly and without a single hitch, especially Andrew Peart and Tyler Mayo who were present on both days.”

In the smaller schools event, Lealholm were third with 181 points, Glaisdale – second with 186 and Danby – first with 192 – giving headteacher Tim Landers a great send off in his last-term before retirement.

In the larger schools event, third were Airy Hill with 172 points; second East Whitby with 179 and first Stakesby with 189.

All three of these schools will represent Whitby in the Ryedale and Whitby final.

This event was a Sky Sports Living for Sport project and former Olympic gymnast Craig Heap will be visiting the college in May to celebrate the sports leaders’ achievements.

Certificates were sponsored by More-Life.
