Orienteering fun for school pupils

A TOTAL of 143 Whitby area primary school children took part in an orienteering festival for years five and six children hosted at East Barnby Outdoor Education Centre.

The schools involved were Danby, Stakesby, Sleights, East Whitby, Castleton, Goathland and Ruswarp.

The event was organised as a joint effort between the Ryedale and Whitby School Sports Partnership and East Barnby Outdoor Education Centre.

The weather was favourable, with the sun actually making an appearance.

Electronic timing was used to monitor each pair of orienteers and work out the scores for the overall afternoon.

The individual pair awards went to – 1 Kane Harland & William Richardson, Sleights; 2 Jayne Michie & Chantel Bedingfield, Sleights; 3 Torvi Hobbs –Hart & James Murfield, Stakesby.

The overall school results were – 1 Sleights, 2 Ruswarp, 3 Stakesby.

The event was very enjoyable and Caroline Watson from the Whitby and Ryedale School Sports Patnership thanks all who took part and helped to make it a very successful afternoon.

She especially wants to thank Katherine Price, Paul Taylor and Voluntary instructor Mark from East Barnby for all of their efforts.
