Sleights Bowling Club have now played three matches of the new season, winning two and losing one, but all three were close finishes.

Sleights beat Marske 44-37 in a curtailed game, then lost to Hutton le Hole 75-88, before beating Thornton Dale 83-77.

On May 9, the annual Captains Pairs competition took place on a beautiful afternoon, with a good entry of 20 teams. This is a knockout competition where players choose their own partners, and it is played over nine ends with four woods each.

There were many close and exciting matches in the first two rounds, with the pairing of Nick Campbell and his mother Lola playing exceptionally well. In the third round, Nick and Lola continued in the same way when beating Steve Harrison and Keith Thompson.

Eddie, with his new mottled woods, and Lucy White showed they were also playing well as they beat John Pybus and Bill Nicol.

In the bottom half of the draw, Benny and Freda Lawson were going along well as they beat Roly and Eileen Clark. The game between Club Captain John Coxon with Pat Perry, and Vice Captain Keith Guy with Hilda Brown, was exciting as it went down to the wire, and required an extra end before Keith and Hilda won through to the semi-final where they were beaten by Benny and Freda.

Eddie and Lucy also went through to the final as they beat Nick and Lola.

The final between Eddie and Lucy White against Benny and Freda Lawson, could not have been much closer as the scores mounted slowly and evenly, with amazing shots from both teams.

Eddie and Lucy went into the last end, one up, and were still holding shot with Freda having just one bowl left, with which she managed to strike the Jack, but it just ran away side ways to the opposition.

Eddie and Lucy White were presented with the Captains Pairs Trophies, by John Coxon.
