Whitby is set to play host to the inaugural Whitby Seafoods Junior Beach Classic beach volleyball competition next month.
Hosted by North Riding Eagles Volleyball Club, with support from Volleyball England, the tournament will take place on Saturday May 21, with special guests Team GB’s Chris Gregory and Jake Sheaf set to be in attendance.
“The coming to Whitby of a nationally-backed volleyball competition is a huge boost to our club and the town,” Eagles head coach Anthony Laffan said.
“It is a nice reward as well to all the schools and the council who have backed the Eagles over the years.”
The event is the first of its kind since local business Whitby Seafoods became an official supporter of Volleyball England, the sport’s national governing body.
“We are thrilled to be joining the volleyball community to run this exciting beach tournament for the first time,” said Daniel Whittle of Whitby Seafoods.
“We’re all fans of anything at the seaside so to bring beach volleyball to our sands in an Olympic year is just fantastic.”
The competition will be open to under-18 boys and girls’ pairs.
Each team will play at least three matches and have the chance to get top tips from England’s best beach volleyball pair of Gregory and Sheaf.
The pair will be also supporting The North Riding Eagles in running a local schools training camp as Eskdale School on April 20.
Rohan West, participation director for Volleyball England, added: “We’re looking forward to holding our first event in Whitby alongside Whitby Seafoods.
“Their passion and drive for beach volleyball and their local communities will no doubt enable us to hold a fantastic event.”

An open age, four-a-side social tournament for anyone interested in giving the game a go will also run alongside the main event.
