WHITBY’S spring angling festival gets under way on Saturday (14 April) with competitors vying for the £1,000 jackpot.

Whitby Charter Skippers’ Association, which is organising the 16-day event, is delighted to welcome on board new sponsors The Station Inn in Whitby and MC Electricals - both of which are offering £500 towards the first prize.

Paul Kilpatrick, chairman of the charter skippers, said: “Last year saw some excellent catches of fish during the festival so once again competition should be fierce.

“Anglers come from all over the country chasing the big prize.”

As well as the £1,000 top prize, anglers can also compete for the £100 in daily prizes, making £2,600 in cash in prize money on offer.

The association is also pleased to announce a new sponsor - the Co-operative - for the grand summer festival when a jackpot of £5,000 will be paid out to the angler with the biggest fish. This commences on Saturday 16 June.

The charter skippers offers a “massive thank you” to all new sponsors

Last year’s spring festival winner was local lad Paul Britton, with a cracking cod.
