Whitby pair land Grouse Foursomes success

The first honours board competition of the year, the Grouse Foursomes, was won by Denis Roper and Tam McConville, who produced an excellent nett 62 in this challenging format of alternate shots.

Paul Ventress and John Carter were a distant second place on 69, ahead of Craig Thompson and Steve Thornton on 69 ½.

Robin Sisson and Richard Marshall scored 70 ½, which was tied by Kevin Barker and Graham Wicking.

Ian Wiggins and younger son Sam had 71, with James Jewell and Dean Bennett on 71 ½.

The Texas Scramble played on Saturday 11 May was won by Simon Walker and ‘Team Wiggins’, Ian, Alex and Sam, with 59.4. Bob Scott, Dave Upton, Martin Shackleton and Richard Brown were second with 60.1, pushing Paul Mendelsohn, Colin Hood, Paul Warrilow and Brian Jamieson into third by the narrowest of margins after they had scored 60.2.

Les Underwood, Tom Havelock, Mike Rothwell and Richard Marshall were fourth on 61.0.

Earlier in the week, Richard Barker won the Midweek Stableford with 40 points.

Peter C Brown was second with 39, just ahead of Mike Coates, Tony Orton, Richard Marshall, Brian Grange, Garry

Walker and Paul Mendelsohn on 38. John Hartley, Kieran Noble and Alex Wiggins had 37. The ladies section held the May Medal on Tuesday 7 and this was combined with the Jersey Trophy for all those who had qualified over the previous year.

The winner of both competitions was Marjorie Mackenzie with 76, from Janet Wightman on 80, Mandy Coates on 82 and Kate Bradley on 84.

The nine-hole accumulator was won by Diana Upton with 10 points from Jean Owens with 9.

There will be a Waltzcompetition on Saturday 18 May.

For those unfamiliar with this format, it is played in teams of three; one score counts on hole 1, two scores on hole 2 and all three on hole 3.

This pattern repeats throughout the round.

Sunday’s competition is the WG Robinson Cup and there is a Midweek Stableford on Wednesday.

A forward notice that the Silver Salver Mixed Greensome takes place on Friday 31 May with tee times from 3pm until 4.30pm.

Times can be booked on the sheet in the middle hall.

All junior golfers please note: I have had to postpone the start of the junior coaching to Sunday 29 May at 9.30am.

My apologies for the change of date.

Mike Brown won £100 in this week’s 200 Club draw.

Tony’s Tip: Q is for Quiet. This is the feeling you should aim for throughout your game, but particularly in the short game.
