WHITBY Shotokan Karate Club held its second annual grading at Airy Hill School with the students ranging from novice to senior purple belt.

The examining panel consisted of six senior black belt instructors - Senseis Mike Howard 4th dan, Jim White 3rd dan, Chris Watmouth 2nd dan, Daniel Howard 1st dan, Sallyann Smith 1st dan and Ian Henderson 1st dan.

The students were tested on their karate skills from simple punching and blocking techniques to the more technical applications of Kihon Kata (basic forms) Heian Kata (more advanced forms) and advanced fighting techniques.

Each grading at junior level wins the student a coloured tag on the white belt until three tags are achieved before they progress to the first coloured belt (orange) then two tags from orange to red Belt.

The standard of the gradings were magnificent and all students performed to the satisfaction of the examination panel. The following students gained their awards:

From Novice to 1st Mon (White Belt + 1 yellow tag) Beth Mortimer, Casey Dukeson, Daisy Stokoe, Eve Mortimer, George Peirson, Joseph Pierson and Joseph Hatchwell.

From 1st Mon to 2nd Mon (White Belt + 2 yellow tags) Charlotte Kerr, Evie Tull, Harrison Dove, Harry Foster, Lewis Brown, Oliver Gower, Garath Mills, Leah Brunton, Mae Knight, Owen Mills, Sheldon Hegarty, Sheona Swales and Jay Grady.

From 4th Mon Orange Belt to 5th Mon (Orange Belt + 2 yellow tags) Billy Fewster, Connor Trueman, Evan Walker, Rosie Hutt and Tom Rodwell.

From 5th Mon to 6th Mon (Orange Belt + 3 yellow tags) Ben Locker Alex Crank, Joe Davies, Josh Winter and Thomas Allcock.

Chief instructor Sensei Mike Howard congratulated all junior students, whose ages range from five to eight, on their achievements and called for a round of applause from their parents. He added the standard of the students reflected the “exceptionally high” standard of the club instructors.

After a short break the grading continued with red and yellow belts. Elliott Hewison was promoted from red 1 tag to yellow belt, jumping a grade and Billy Fannan, Callum Marsey and Callem Walker were promoted to green belt.

The senior grading followed and Simon Abbot moved up to 6th Kyu Green Belt, Andy Spillman. Mat Spillman and Patrick McCourt all gained their second purple belts. Luke Fraser and Luke Grady both gained their 3rd Kyu brown belts.

The club is registered with the Independent Federation Of Martial Arts. All instructors are qualified black belt senseis and hold City & Guilds Diplomas for coaching adults and children including Health and Safety and Child Protection. The club trains twice weekly at Airy Hill, Mondays and Thursday - novices 5.30-6.30pm; intermediate 6.30-7.30pm and advanced 7.30-9pm.
