THIS Saturday (21 Apr) sees the sporting community of Whitby and district come together for the Whitby Community Sports Fair.
The event takes place at Whitby Leisure Centre from 10am to noon - and the event has been awarded the prestigious London 2012 Inspired award.
Matt Hewison, the council’s sports development officer, said: “The Whitby event should be really exciting with many of the local pro-active clubs attending including: Whitby Table Tennis Club, Whitby Wizards Basketball Club, Loftus and Whitby Athletics Club, Whitby Shotokan Karate Club and Scaling Dam Sailing Club, who are bringing a boat with them.
“All the clubs are attending to raise awareness of their sport and clubs and inform people how they can become involved.
“There will also be information about sports funding, safeguarding and full details of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay Route, which arrives in the town on the 18 June.
“The event is an excellent opportunity for community members to go along and find out more about local sports participation and volunteering aspects.”
As part of the fair, a free prize draw has been put together for anyone who attends.
Mr Hewison added: “We have been really lucky to get some excellent prizes to give away as part of the fair.
“These include two tickets to a Leeds Rhinos rugby league fixture, a Middlesbrough FC signed pennant, gym membership of either Scarborough Sports Centre or Whitby Leisure Centre, a stadium tour of Newcastle United’s Sports Direct Arena, two cases of sports drinks bottles with carriers, a stadium tour of Preston North End’s Deepdale Stadium, an Adidas Olympic t-shirt and the opportunity to gain a year’s membership to one of the participating clubs.
“These prizes will hopefully give people another reason to attend the fair.”
The event is free to attend and if any clubs wish to still be involved or for further details, contact Matt on (01723) 501984 or 07967 465328.
