WHITBY GOLF CLUB ROUND-UP: Awards joy for mixed team

Congratulations to Whitby Golf Club's mixed team of Bob Scott, Janet McGeehin, Mike Coates and SiewChoon Tan, who won the Scarborough District Senior Team 2016 Award at the presentation evening on Monday night.

This follows their outstanding victory in the England Golf Team Championship at Frilford Heath in 2016.

Whitby Golf Club’s representatives in the Daily Mail Foursomes 2017, Kevin Barker and Andy Lawler, were drawn to play Wilton GC away in the first round, and managed a creditable win by 2 & 1.

Whitby’s Rabbits finished in eighth place in the recent Alliance at North Cliff with a three-card aggregate of 208, leaving the club in ninth position overall.

Whitby scores were: 68 Andy Lawler and Steve Ingleston, Alan Atkinson and Howard Dean; 72 Mel Purvis and Colin Coates, Dave Jewell and John McMurran; 74 Fraser Seaton and Nigel Aspden, Colin Rutland and Malcolm Eglon.

The Tigers Alliance due to be played at Bridlington Links was postponed following heavy overnight rain, and will now take place this Saturday, weather permitting.

John Hartley won the midweek stableford with 39 points, beating regular playing partner Tam McConville by one point.

Duncan Marson had 37, Mike Harper 35, and Bill Estill, Steve Dosdale, Chris Shardlow and Tony Orton had 34.

Saturday’s stableford was won by Mike Rothwell, narrowly beating James Jewell on a countback after they had tied on 38.

McConville, Steve Purvis and Chris Batchelor had 37, with Chris Pennock on 34 and Bob Scott and Robin Sisson on 33.

McConville leads the best 10 cards with 397, from Roger Davison on 384, Robin Sisson and Steve Swales on 375 and Brian Jamieson on 368.

Returning from a long lay-off was no hardship for Graham Wicking as he partnered Colin Rutland to a 62 to win Sunday’s Fourball Betterball.

Howard Dean and captain Steve Ellis took second place on the back nine after tying with Bob Scott and Adrian Brown.

Brown and Tam McConville lead Division One of the Eclectic with 54, ahead of Simon Walker, Scott and Bill Estill.

In a very tight competition Jem Cockerill, Brian Jamieson, Howard Dean and Colin Rutland are tied on 50 at the top of Division Two.

McConville leads the best six cards with 366, but Howard Dean has narrowed his lead to just two with his total of 368. Mike Clarkson is third on 373.

On Saturday the club is running the first men’s open day of 2017.

There is a fourball betterball on Sunday morning, and the course is closed until 12noon on Monday with a ladies winter alliance.

The ladies play their March Medal on Tuesday and the men have a midweek stableford on Wednesday.

Ian Harrison was this week’s winner of £100 in the 200 Club weekly draw.
