THE Whitby Gazette has received a glowing endorsement of its sports coverage - which is now taking pride of place in the front reception of the newspaper’s Bridge Street offices.

The mounted certificate was made by Whitby school sports co-ordinator Pete Woolley, who was delighted with the Gazette’s coverage of World Cup Wednesday - a rugby tournament for primary schools.

We published pictures and names of all participating school teams as well as a round-up, full results and an interview with mentor for the day, ex-rugby player Katy Storie, who was capped 24 times by England.

Whitby Gazette sports editor Duncan Atkins said: “This recognition of our efforts was a pleasant surprise and one which was fully appreciated by the whole team.

“Pete and his colleague Caroline Watson - not to mention the Young Leaders from local schools - do a great job in organising so many different sporting events over the year and we are delighted to give them our full backing.”
