WHITBY’S Academy side made up of some Scarborough university students, colts and older heads played a well-drilled Acklam side.

The game was played in the right spirit of rugby and it was Whitby who surprised the home side as quick ball gave Matt Kendrew to sprint in from 50metres to give Whitby an early lead.

Acklam tried to use the wind in the first half but aimless kicking was soon run back by a backline including Purves and Fountain.

Scrum half Joe Lenton had a great game and it was his awareness to throw a dummy which left the forwards standing as he burst through from 30m to score under the posts. The conversion was missed.

Acklam hit back soon after as their flanker picked up and burst through to score to bring the home side back into the game.

At the close of the first half in the last play, a huge ‘Gary Owen’ put up by the experienced Stentiford and, chased by the forwards, put their winger under pressure who spilled the ball for debutant Daniel Cairns to mop up and score from short range.

This ended the half with the scoreline 15-7 to Whitby.

The second half saw the emergence of Tom Scarborough, playing a cracking game at number eight, Taylor at fly half and Aaron Jones at outside centre. These three players were awesome to help Whitby over the line.

The game became hard fought and scrappy as both team tired. Watson, Reed and Vasey were dogged in defence and Marcus Coates provided much need turnover at every breakdown.

Whitby’s lightweight pack of Coomber and Cairns controlled the ball from the lineout and Joe Lenton scored from short range.

And the conversion was added to push the scoring out of Acklam’s reach.

Richards and Steyert learned valuable lessons as they are still learning their trade but all in all a great team performance.

Man of the match - Tom Scarborough (forwards), Aaron Jones (backs).

November sees the academy side play at homeon Saturday againt Billingham, 12th Hartlepool Rovers thirds, 19th Yarm seconds, and Darlington thirds. Players are asked to make sure they can play every week.
