WHITBY Hockey Club had a tough match against away against Stokesley.
Stokesley opened up strongly with their forwards making some punishing runs at the Whitby defence.
Whitby were caught off-guard and took a good 20 minutes to settle into their game.
Stokesley had some skilful and experienced forwards who kept Beth Sanderson, Lisa Mussett and Jo Braithwaite busy in midfield.
Their breaks were fast and furious with Alex Bagnall and Sammy Gibson working tirelessly at the back and making some fantastic clearances out of a congested circle.
Kirsty Dixon was on fire, making diving saves, punching the ball out of the goal and her mobility was superb.
She kept the scoreline goalless at half-time.
The midfield were finding it difficult to find Whitby forwards who were struggling to utilise the spaces and movement onto the ball.
Whitby were awarded several corners but just didn’t have the fighting finish normally in evidence.
Nicola Kent and Beth Grason worked hard in centre field and eventually Whitby were rewarded with a great goal from a Nicola Kent solo run from the halfway line, finding Emily Webster in the perfect position to slot home for 1-0.
Whitby needed this goal to lift their spirits and play.
During the last 15 minutes of play, Whitby pressed ahead but could not set up another shot.
Well done to the midfield and defence who probably had their hardest game yet to date.
