WITH the tail end of hurricane Irene bearing down, only two boats were entered into the first day of the late summer angling festival, organised by Whitby Charter Skippers’ Association, on Saturday.
But it was a great day for Barnsley angler John Walker who caught a cod of 17lb 11.5oz on Never-Can-Tell-A, skippered by Jon Whitton, to set the bench mark for the festival and put himself in pole positiomn for the £1,000 top prize.
Never-Can-Tell-A and Loan Shark were the only boats entered in the competition and the bad weather is already making its mark, with Sunday’s fishing cancelled.
