AFTER the recent disappointments of two plate final defeats at the Chester 7’s & RugbyRocks 7s, Whitby RUFC at last tasted success in the North Yorkshire 7’s tournament held at Richmond.
Having progressed through their group, the Maroons beat Richmond Barbarians in the semi-final, before facing Northallerton in the final.
Whitby conceded an early try and trailed 7-0 until the dying seconds of the final when James Gorrie turned over possession allowing Anth Craig to sprint 50 metres down the right wing & score under the posts.
Sam Webster held his nerve to make the conversion and level the scores to send the game into extra-time.
Whitby sealed victory when Craig turned provider, capitalising on a loose ball before releasing hooker Dyran Sullivan to touch down, with Webster again converting to take the final score to 14-7.
Whitby captain, Bruce Reed, said: “I’m really proud of the lads’ achievement in bringing home some silverware.
“We’ve had a great 7s season, participating in three tournaments and facing some top-class teams and I look forward to our continued success next season.”
