LAST weekend was a successful one for local skiing sensation Thea Fenwick (11) as she scooped a national podium place in her first freestyle skiing competition.
Thea travelled to her training slope at Snozone, Castleford, to compete in The Brits – the UK Freestyle Ski Championships.
Thea skied in the kids’ freestyle event where under 12s compete over a course of rails, jumps and other features.
Competitors complete two runs, with the only highest scoring run counting; marks are awarded for the most impressive style and tricks.
Thea skied against much more experienced competitors and surprised all those watching by attempting some new tricks, eventually securing second place, a silver medal and prizes from the competition sponsors.
Thea also took part in the ‘all ages’ event, competing against adult competitors, placing an impressive equal 9th.
Thea, who attends Fyling Hall School, is a member SZ Racing Club in Leeds, where she trains weekly.
She was recently accepted onto the Yorkshire Ski Squad and hopes to compete in Europe this winter.
Thea’s mum, Sarah Fenwick, said: “Freestyle skiing is an exciting spectator sport but my heart was in my mouth watching Thea attempt such a challenging course.
“She amazed us all by forgetting her fear and pulling off some impressive tricks.
“I couldn’t believe it when they announced that she had won the silver medal.
“We’re thrilled that all the years of training are paying off.”
