Stylish end to winter season for Michael

MICHAEL Coates, one of the most promising juniors at Whitby Golf Club, finished the winter season in style, producing the best individual score in Saturday’s Team Stableford and forming part of the winning team, then partnering Andrew Wood to come first in the Fourball Betterball on Sunday.

In the Team Stableford, Michael’s 45 points was added to Paul Ventress (40), Colin Rutland (38) and Mark Wilson (32) to give a three-card total of 123. Dave Batchelor (40), Andy Smith (39), Alistair Lyth (38) and Les Spedding (36) were second on 117, beating Steve Dosdale (44), Martin Shackleton (37), Mark Kerr (36) and Bob Scott (32) by virtue of the better fourth card.

Individual scores: 45 Michael Coates; 44 Steve Dosdale; 42 Tam McConville; 40 Dave Batchelor, Mick Allen, Dave Weatherill, Paul Ventres, Colin Coates and Les Underwood.

This competition brings the Best 10 Cards to a close and Michael’s 45 points took him into first place with an aggregate of 413, overhauling long-time leader Tam McConville on 407. Alistair Lyth was third on 386, ahead of Ivan Ross on 380, Steve Dosdale on 379 and Dave Batchelor and Mike Rothwell on 378.

Andrew Wood and Michael Coates had a 63 in Sunday’s Fourball Betterball, taking first place from Simon Walker and Colin Rutland over the back nine holes. Steve Ellis and Dave Kirk were third on 64 with Dave Collett and Dave Weatherill taking the final place on 65.

Results of the Best Six Cards and the Eclectics will be published next week.

Earlier in the week Richard Brown won the Midweek Stableford with 41 points, beating Howard Drake and Paul Mendelsohn over the back nine holes. Malcolm Eglon, John Carter and Simon Gibson had 40, with Bill Estill on 39. Dan Brown, Tam McConville and Bob Scott had 38.

Whitby is sending three teams of four to the final Alliance event of the winter season to be played at Bridlington on Saturday 24 March. This is an Am-Am competition (best two scores from the four players on each hole) and is played with a shotgun start at 9am.

Whitby’s teams are: A) Colin Upton, Dave Upton, Mark Kerr and Bob Scott; B) James Jewell, Dean Bennett, Tam McConville and Steve Ellis; C) Paul Ventress, Kevin Barker, Richard Marshall and Peter Easton. Mike Clarkson is the reserve.

The ladies section played their monthly Stableford competition on Thursday 15 March. Sue Dryden was the winner with 37 points, ahead of Maureen Eglon on 35, Marjorie Mackenzie on 31 and Wendy Hurworth on 30.

This weekend sees the start of the main competition season for the men with the Opening Stableford on Saturday 24 March, the Opening Bogey on Sunday 25 and a Midweek Stableford on Wednesday.

As long as nothing untoward happens with the weather, it is intended to stop using the winter fairway mats and simply use ‘preferred lies on the fairway’, meaning that all scores will count for handicap purposes.

Starting sheets will be in use for all the mens competitions from now on. Ladies Opening Day is on Tuesday 27 March.

Angie Key was this week’s winner of £100 in the 200 Club weekly draw.

Tony’s Tip: don’t get caught out by the effect sloping lies will have on the trajectory of the ball. Be aware that the ball will fly higher, and thus shorter, off an uphill lie, and lower and longer off a downhill lie, so you must club accordingly to get the ball on the green.
