Whitby is sending three teams of four to the final Alliance event of the winter season to be played at Bridlington on Saturday 24 March. This is an Am-Am competition (best two scores from the four players on each hole) and is played with a shotgun start at 9am.
Whitby’s teams are: A) Colin Upton, Dave Upton, Mark Kerr and Bob Scott; B) James Jewell, Dean Bennett, Tam McConville and Steve Ellis; C) Paul Ventress, Kevin Barker, Richard Marshall and Peter Easton. Mike Clarkson is the reserve.
The ladies section played their monthly Stableford competition on Thursday 15 March. Sue Dryden was the winner with 37 points, ahead of Maureen Eglon on 35, Marjorie Mackenzie on 31 and Wendy Hurworth on 30.
This weekend sees the start of the main competition season for the men with the Opening Stableford on Saturday 24 March, the Opening Bogey on Sunday 25 and a Midweek Stableford on Wednesday.
As long as nothing untoward happens with the weather, it is intended to stop using the winter fairway mats and simply use ‘preferred lies on the fairway’, meaning that all scores will count for handicap purposes.
Starting sheets will be in use for all the mens competitions from now on. Ladies Opening Day is on Tuesday 27 March.
Angie Key was this week’s winner of £100 in the 200 Club weekly draw.
Tony’s Tip: don’t get caught out by the effect sloping lies will have on the trajectory of the ball. Be aware that the ball will fly higher, and thus shorter, off an uphill lie, and lower and longer off a downhill lie, so you must club accordingly to get the ball on the green.
