LAST weekend was a successful one for local skiing sensation Thea Fenwick.
Thea (10) travelled to her training slope at Snozone, Castleford, to compete in the Yorkshire Ski Championships.
Her main event was the Moguls competition in which skiers of all ages compete over a series of bumps or ‘Moguls’ where they are judged on speed, style and the height of their jumps.
In the qualifying round, Thea competed against much older skiers, completing a very fast run with a huge jump.
She surprised all those watching by scoring so well that she qualified to compete in the Ladies’ Moguls final.
In the final round, Thea was thrilled to secure 2nd place in the Under 12s and 5th place in the Ladies’ overall rankings.
Thea also competed in the alpine races (slalom and giant slalom). Despite these not being her main events, Thea clinched 4th place in the under 12s competition - a fantastic achievement considering she had not trained for this event.
Thea is a member of SZ Racing Club at the indoor snow slope at Castleford.
Her skiing potential has recently been recognised by selectors from the Yorkshire Ski Federation, as she has been selected to represent the county on the Yorkshire Freestyle Development Squad.
This means that Thea, who attends Sleights School, will train and compete alongside older members of the squad in order to develop her talent.
Thea’s mum, Sarah Fenwick, said: “Thea only discovered that she had talent for Moguls skiing last year, so her performance in the Yorkshire Championships was fantastic.
“We’re also thrilled that she’s been selected for the Yorkshire Freestyle Team.
“We’re now hoping for sponsorship from local people to enable to compete with the team in Sweden this winter.”
