A Fylingthorpe cyclist has been selected for a prestigious track meet this weekend – with a coaching session from Team GB Olympian Sir Chris Hoy thrown in too.

Samantha Verrill (13) was selected to ride for the north east region at Glasgow this weekend on the back of some excellent recent form.

At the prestigious invitation-only event, each pro team adopts a future star for the series which Samantha knows is a great opportunity to gain inside knowledge and race with some of the best track riders in the world in front of more than 2,000 spectators.

She will also receive a coaching session from Sir Chris Hoy, one of the world’s most decorated gold medal-winning athletes.

Riding recently with mainly 16-year-old girls on the velodrome, Samantha achieved her best result of the year, getting fifth in the 15km points race and lapping the field which contained several national champions.

Samantha – who won the Scarborough and District Sports Council’s junior sports girl under 14 award this week – is currently ranked third nationally at under 14 level.

In an international three-day north west tour, her five stage placings were 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15, giving her 11th overall, with only 20 seconds separating the top 15.

At Milton Keynes national series, she remounted after a crash and came 10th, with consistent first places in north east races.

Her main success has come in the northern area youth track omnium over three rounds with the top five going to national final.

In the northern area, she gained two firsts and a second, which she was delighted with, followed by 10th in the national final at Reading.

Samantha also won the north east circuit track championships, again riding in the under 16s. ,

Next season looks busy with weekly trips to Manchester velodrome after Christmas, then trips to Scotland, the Isle of Man, Belgium, Spain and Holland plus the south of England. Last season, she clocked up 15,000 miles.
