Whitby Seals’ first novice swimming gala of 2015, the friendly novice event, took place in the pool at Whitby Leisure Centre.
Three district swimming clubs took part - the Seals, Scarborough Kingfishers and Loftus Dolphins.
This gala is specifically aimed at young novice swimmers competing in nine and under and 11 and under age groups. It provides an opportunity for the young swimmers to gain confidence and team spirit while competing in a low level gala with the technical swimming rules and regulations relaxed.
Following last year’s novice gala events it was decided, by all the clubs involved, to introduce cut-off times, the aim of which to prevent the clubs loading their teams with higher than novice grade swimmers, to aid winning the gala.
Ten boys and 12 girls were selected for the Whitby Seals team, with some aged just seven and swimming in their first ever swimming gala.
With the introduction of cut-off times, the gala took on a very different dynamic from previous novice galas. Loftus Dolphins took the lead and maintained it throughout.
A keen team selection kept their swimmers just inside the cut off times.
Whitby Seals and Scarborough Kingfishers’ A and B teams battled it out, all three teams close on points. The final results were:
Loftus Dolphins 1st, Whitby Seals 2nd, Scarborough Kingfishers A & B teams 3rd and 4th.
During the gala there were four cut-off penalties awarded, three of which were in the boys 11 years and under 25m butterfly event, resulting in Scarborough Kingfishers B team taking 1st place.
Excellent individual 1st place swimming from Eve Nock 25m butterfly, Jorja Wright 25m breastroke and Henry Cornforth 25m freestyle; Lewis Dobson with the only speeding penalty for Whitby Seals.
Whitby Seals of the Day were awarded to Henry Cornforth (9yrs) and Jorja Wright (9yrs) - both pictured with their certificates and seal pups.
