Friday at Runswick Bay proved to be the perfect night for North Riding Eagles’ beach volleyball and victory going to Botton village.
The Botton side reached the final after a string of strong performances in the group stage but were expected to get beaten by a strong North Riding Eagles / Scarborough side in the final.
However, Botton grew in confidence. Cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd, they raised their game and villager Ian Hatch led his fellow Botton team-mates to victory with his fantastic blocking and serving. This summer there are mini-fun tournaments being held along the coast from Saltburn to Bridlington with Whitby and Scarborough being the main hubs so there are some great opportunities for locals to join in the fun.
Already on a Monday, staff and students are accessing the satellite volleyball club coaching at Caedmon College Whitby which runs from 3.45pm to 5.15pm and is open to all the Whitby and Esk Valley schools.
It is hoped to see more local school teams taking part in these tournaments as preparation for beach volleyball tournaments at the RNLI flag weekend and Whitby Regatta. For people up the Esk Valley and further along the coast Friday night sessions run at Runswick Bay and Danby. For further details check www.facebook.com/beachvolleyballwhitbyandscarborough
