WHITBY’S rowing race season began with the Abbey Gift Races, with Friendship nudging into an early lead ahead of the German Ocean.

Training for both clubs up to now has not been ideal due to poor sea conditions and heavy rain for harbour training and low tides.

The first race of the day saw the boys’ 14 to 17 years. Sea conditions while not ideal aloud for the races to start.

Fishermen’s crew stroke by Connor Clements took the first race by a good margin with Jack Stewart’s crew taking second for Friendship.

The girls’ 14 to 17 years gave a good win to Jessica Harrison’s crew for Friendship over Kirsty Kemsley for Fishermen’s.

Due to sea conditions deteriorating the men’s 18 to 25 years had to be cancelled along with the remaining races.

Tuesday evening began with a win for Luke Clarkson’s Friendship over Mat Kendrew’s crew who came second for Fishermen’s.

The ladies’ over 18 years saw two very evenly matched crews of Jenny Hewison for Fishermen’s and Vicky Walker for Friendship.

Up to The Met, only half a boat length was between the two crews. Gradually Jenny Hewison’s crew pulled through Friendship and by The Pavilion, had clear water and went onto win, giving Vicky Walker’s crew second place.

Sea conditions were again not ideal for the rescheduled men’s over 25 races, making racing that bit more difficult.

Richard Dowson’s crew for Friendship took an early lead from Mike Brown also for Friendship. Dowson kept the lead but Brown started pulling back around The Pavilion, but could not catch the lead boat of Dowson, who won by several clear boat lengths.
