FOR the first time in 12 years, the Wilkinson Sword Trophy was won by a player from outside the Whitby area.
The competition, abandoned two weeks ago previously to rain, resumed at Croft, near Darlington, at the last 16 stage.
The game of the day was probably between home player Shaun Turner and Ugthorpe’s Ian Carr, with Turner coming out on top 21-18.
He was then beaten by team-mate Richard Watson 21-14 in the semi-final.
The other semi saw an easy win for Fylingthorpe’s Mike Mendelsohn over Reeth player Lawrie Allanson 21-6.
The three-legged final wasn’t the classic everyone expected with neither player producing anything like their best form.
Watson won the first leg 15-6 with Mendelsohn replying 15-11. Watson finally ran out the winner with a 15-9 final leg triumph to claim the coveted trophy.
