A young Whitby rugby side with a backbone of first teamers took on Old Mods touring team from Leeds.
Gordon Bland, playing at nine, opened the scoring on two minutes with a quick-thinking individual score.
Assisted by a very strong wind, Old Mods put down their marker by dominating the set piece play and helped by sometimes mystifying decisions at the breakdown. They opened up a 20-5 lead as Whitby struggled.
Half-time came and Whitby strengthened things up, bringing on the season’s top try-scorer Dave Straker and veteran back row Richard Harrison.
Straker had an immediate galvanising effect, with Bland grabbing his second try.
Moments after, the powerful Straker smashed through several tackles to make it 17-20 and it was game on.
To their credit, the Leeds side launched a powerful counter-attack through their devastating right winger and made the game safe with a fine try.
Whitby never gave up and had the final word when centre Ed Richardson, who enjoyed a good match, went over, and the conversion was added which meant a defeat by a single point.
The effort of all Whitby’s younger players was there for all to see.
On this form, many will be pushing for first team places sooner rather than later.
Man of the match: John Hatton - stepped in at hooker and threw in straight.
