NOMINATIONS are now being invited for the Whitby area’s sporting equivalent of The Oscars.

There are 18 categories in the Scarborough and District Sports Council annual sports awards which recognise achievement at a junior and senior level, volunteering, inclusive sport, coaching, club stalwarts and playing teams in the borough.

Local sports clubs, schools, community organisations and individuals are now being encouraged to recognise talented sports persons and teams by making a nomination.

Whitby has fared well in recent times with athlete Grace Rodgers, trials bike rider Nikita Smith, sports volunteer Richard Fletcher and horse rider Tom Walker all winners in 2010.

Chris Rhodes, chairman of the District Sports Council, said: “The awards are a fantastic opportunity for the borough to recognise its sporting talent and achievers.

“We have such a diverse range of sporting activity with so many achievers.

“The awards provide a real stage to showcase this talent and give them the recognition they deserve.”

The winners of each category will be announced during a presentation ceremony from 7.30pm on Thursday 24 November at the Scarborough Spa Complex.
