Whitby sidecar racer Dave Atkinson is looking forward to an exciting new chapter as he welcomes on board new passenger Mike Aylott.
After four great years of racing, long-term passenger Phil “Gromit” Knapton decided to move on to pastures new.
Instead of giving up, the Team decided to go back to the drawing board and formulate a new race plan with the title goal of winning the British Formula II sidecar title.
As part of this plan, the team are delighted to announce they have secured the passenger services of Sowerby Bridge-based Aylott, one of the most under-rated passengers in the country.
He has accrued more than 90 podium places since he started –40 of which have been race wins – and also has five TT podiums to his name.
Aylott started racing in 2005 and has steadily worked his way up the ranks and is now one of the most talented passengers in the sport.
With his former driver Frank Lelias, he won the British F2 Cup Championship in 2011 and has won a number of national passenger awards.
Atkinson told the Whitby Gazette: “When Phil told me that he would like to race with the Formula 1 lads, our first choice was Mike so we were over the moon when he agreed to join the team.”
As part of the 2014 title challenge, it was decided the old bike should be sold and replaced with a newer, more competitive model.
This will still be a Louis Christen chassis but will be a lot newer. With this upgrade the team, will also be changing engine manufacturer to the far more competitive Honda CBR 600rr engines.
The team are busy getting ready for the new bike to come, ready for the new season which kicks off at Brands Hatch on April 5-6.
The British Formula II Sidecar Championship dates are as follows:
April 5-6: Brands Hatch
April 26: Oulton Park Wirral; May 4-5: Cadwell Park
June 26-27: Donington Park; August 16-17: Croft
October 4-5: Cadwell Park
Other fixtures will include the Isle of Man TT Oliver’s Mount. Lastly, and most importantly, the team thank sponsors Passage to India, Whitby Cottages, Roman Baths, MSP Auto Paint, HEL Performance, ABC Storage, York Timber Products, Dave Hudspeth Carpets and RnR Coatings.
