There is a new leader in Whitby’s spring angling festival after Johnny Handon landed a 10lb 14 oz beast this evening.

The Hornsea angler’s cod put him in pole position, displacing previous joint leaders Paul Cockill of Skipton and Michael Matthews of Skelton.

Matthews had led for five days until Cockill equalled his catch last Friday.

Two days were lost at sea over the weekend due to inclement weather, but the action resumed on Monday when Hanson struck, reeling in his cod from the boat Shy Torque III.

The festival, run by Whitby Charter Skippers’ Association, is on until a week on Sunday (Apr 26). Whoever catches the heaviest fish will win a £1,000 top prize.
