Cyclists are expected to flock to Whitby this summer for a new event which is being launched as part of the town’s ever-popular regatta.
The event, which is taking place thanks to velo29 events and Scarborough and District Sports Council, is a spin-off from the Tour de Yorkshire which is on its way to the area on May 1.
Richard Williamson of velo29 events, told the Gazette: “We are running a cycle sportive as part of this year’s regatta. It’s a non-competitive event which we expect to attract over 500 riders to the town and enjoy one of three routes across the local area, ranging from 35 to 80 miles.
“Sportives are increasingly popular events. This will be one of seven events we have in the north east and we believe it will be an exciting part of the regatta for many years.
The event is due to start from near the whalebones on Whitby’s West Cliff, where a preliminary launch also takes place this Saturday (Mar 7) at 10am.
