Whitby Maroons picked up their first win of the season with a 37-5 home success over North Shields.

Darryl Grason’s men bounced back from their heavy opening day defeat at Sunderland to produce an impressive performance despite torrential rain at the Showfield.

Early possession and territorial advantage were converted into points via a Stuart Gregson penalty, and the same player then registered the game’s opening try.

This was added to by a score from winger Guy Taylor, with Jack Pearson also touching down to hand the Maroons a 23-0 half-time advantage.

The second half started well for Whitby and the next points arrived courtesy of influential captain Gordon Bland following a trade mark turn of pace.

Full-back Gregson rounded off a good personal and team performance with another converted try of his own before the visitors grabbed a consolation try in the closing stages.
