Whitby RUFC kick off their new league season in Durham and Northumberland 3 on Saturday (1 September).

Having put in some brave performances last time out against bigger sides with larger squads in Durham and Northumberland 2, this season the Maroons will have the opportunity to test themselves against similar level opposition.

The opening game of 2012/13 sees Whitby on the road at Hartlepool BBOB - a side who are traditionally formidable opposition on their own patch.

The majority of last season’s first-team players have now moved on to University so the squad for the 2012/13 season will have a new look to it.

The team desperately need to add some firepower to their front five but if this can be achieved, the backs have the potential to play an open, flowing and exciting game.

The Maroons are aiming to score plenty of tries, play some entertaining rugby and bring back the crowds to the Showfield.

Ollie Roberts is Club Captain, with Steve Allen 1st XV skipper on the field and Tristan Pottas vice captain. Richard Harrison is first team manager, while Jim Fountain skippers the Harlequins.

The coaching side being looked after by Darryl Grason, Matt Webster and Pete Stentiford.

Youngsters to watch out for are the quicksilver Joe Lenton, Gordon Bland, Connor Clements and in the forwards, James Newton and Bruce Reid.

Training takes place at the club every Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm and as always new players are most welcome.

The first home game at the Showfield is on September 8 when Whitby entertain Chester-Le-Street, 3pm kick-off.
