Last-gasp win puts ‘Dales girls in finals

Fylingdales and Whitby netball team made it to the division two finals – but had their work cut out in a tense night’s play.

The team took to the court as soon as they arrived as they were forced to play the first game and last game of the evening after one teams, The Owls, dropped out at short notice.

With no time to warm up, the Dales, in their first match against Autosmart, did well to take a 4-2 lead at half-time.

But in the second half, Autosmart showed they ment business when they drew level with a minute to go and clinched the game 7-6 with the last shot of the game.

This left Dales with an uphill task to make the finals.

They knew they would need a good points difference in case they finished level on points at the end of the night but once again, the girls upped their game in the second match against the Piranhas to win 12-0 with some fantastic shooting from Millie Stonehouse and solid work from Lorna Ready, Sam Jones and Anna Welford.

This was a great result against a side that had given them a close game the week before.

Dales got their lucky break when Tap and Spile and Autosmart drew, leaving a chance for the Dales to make finals – due to be held on November 28 – if they could beat Tap and Spile in the last game.

By now, they were warmed up and ready for action and took the game to their opponents.

Dales were soon 3-0 up with some great play from Emily Watson, Kelly Storr and Beth Hellawell in the centre of court, giving shooters Chloe Purves and Jen Milburn some great ball and at half-time they led 3-1.

Tap and Spile tried everything they could to get back into the game and both teams scored four goals in the second half, but some outstanding defence work from Jordan Spencer and Zara Noble made sure Dales ran out 7-5 winners to clinch a place in the finals.

This was a superb team performance from the squad which, despite an early setback, showed true grit to come back.

Netball training is on Monday nights, 6pm at Whitby Community College sports hall. Anyone wishing to play netball is welcome to go or for further details, contact Fylingdales and Whitby Netball Club on Facebook.
