WHITBY Hockey Club ladies travelled to Sunderland to play Games Club, who currently sit sixth position in the table.
Away games are always tricky as one does not know quite what to expect and this game was no exception.
Whitby, after a shaky start, found themselves at 1-0 down after a defensive misunderstanding was gratefully exploited for a lead by the home team.
Pressure remainded throughout the first half, with Games Club having several chances, but Whitby were the luckier team and capitalised on the opportunities that came their way.
The scoreline for Whitby was opened by Beth Sanderson, quickly followed by goals from Emily Webster and Nicola Kent.
A minute before half-time, optimism returned to Games Club as they scored from a short corner with a clean strike from top circle, believing they were back in the game with the score of 2-3.
It couldn’t be less true, however, as Whitby resolved to improve their passing play, which quickly led to a barrage of goals by Natasha Kent, Emily Webster, Beth Sanderson, Nicola Kent and Jacqui Livera (penalty flick).
With a solid win, Whitby can now look forward to their game against Durham School on Sunday at 1.30pm at Caedmon School Astroturf.
The first tie was won by Durham and Whitby will look to avenge the monster defeat they suffered last October.
To keep promotion hopes alive, taking three points from this game will be of the essence and support is welcomed.
Players of the match for Whitby are Romy Thompson and Emily Webster (four goals).
Many thanks, as always, go to the umpires.
