PLAYERS from around the Whitby area climbed aboard The Esk Moors Active Heather Hopper minibus to make their way to Kettering for a weekend of the highest level volleyball at junior level in the country.
The local community was rallying behind the local team North Riding Eagles - not only had the community minibus proved the solution to the issue of transport but local firm Jet Print came to the rescue with a new kit at short notice.
The day saw North Riding first on in the national under 18 cup against the tournaments favourites Newcastle Staffs VC.
It was a baptism of fire for the local youngsters who narrowly failed to reach double figures as the experienced older players from Staffordshire ran through their full attacking options.
Next up against North Riding was a London club called Boswells. With two England Cadet players in their team and a huge height advantage the young Whitby players looked like they may have taken too much on in qualifying for this tournament but a good North v South battle ensued.
While North Riding Eagles lost, the young Yorkshire team had fought hard to get 17 points but lost by eight points.
The final match on Saturday for North Riding was against Wessex and a close game ensued NRE VC lost 20-25.
By running the stronger players out in the first sets North Riding could gauge the progress the team was making throughout the day with improved performances and results.
In the second sets the younger players along with new players gained valuable court time to help with their development and it also allowed the first teamers to rest for the under 16 tournament the next day.
