SIXTY north east male darts players turned out for the annual Staithes open darts competition.
There were some top players in attendance such as Dave Prins, Tony Eccles and a host of Cleveland county players including former Whitby ace Richie Parkin.
There was also a smattering of East Cleveland players and a competitor from Cornwall who had seen the competition advertised in the Whitby Gazette, all hoping to win the first prize of £1,000 that was on offer.
There was also a good turnout of lady players so the organisers decided to run a separate ladies’ competition and a youths competition which had some very promising young players including Whitby’s Kyle Boushall who was competing in his first darts open.
The darts were excellent all day long with some high scoring and big finishing.
In the end, the men’s competition was won by Paul Jennings who beat Peter Searle in the final, Peter having earlier knocked out Dave Prins.
In the ladies’ competition the winner was Clair Stainsby who also entered the men’s competition and did very well.
The same was said of the youth winner Adam Hunt who not only won the youth competition but also reached the semi-final of the men’s and took the prize for the highest finish of 164.
The players gave a unanimous vote of thanks to organisers Kenny and Marie Dobson and Staithes Athletic Club for all their efforts to bring the competition to the area and expressed hope of coming back next year for the next competition.
