FYLINGDALES and Whitby netballers finally got back into action last Thursday after the Tuesday night game was stopped due to Scalby sports hall roof leaking following torrential rain.

This made the playing surface too slippy to play on leaving and left the girls with a damp trip back over the moors.

To make matters worse, when the game was called off, they were in a comfortable lead against ECR but Thursday’s game was on as, despite the roof still not being repaired, the weather was fine.

After a long Christmas break and the team missing infuential centre Lorna Ready, the first quarter was a tight affair and the experienced Rumours side, who played in division two last season, matched the ‘Dales side.

Only great work from Anna Welford and Sam Lee in defence kept them from scoring only two goals to Dales’ four.

In the second quarter, the girls started to run their mince pies off and with some slick work, scored another eight goals to Rumours’ two to lead 12-4 at half-time.

Chloe Purves doing most of the damage despite being closely marked scoreing some great goals.

Rumours tried to come back in the third quarter with some good attacks but great defensive work by Suzy Purves, Beth Mead and Kelly Storr, they were unable to score any goals in this quarter while ‘Dales added another four - with the best shots coming from Jenny Milburn - to go into the last quarter 16-4 up.

Rumours tried to change their game plan to a defensive setting to reduce the chance of a big score but this had no effect as ‘Dales changed the team around, bringing Beth Helliwell forward and played some fine netball to score another eight goals in the last quarter to Rumours’ 1 to cruise home.

Player of the match: Kelly Storr.
