THE extremely cold conditions meant that three schools from the dales could not attend the basketball festival.
However, Fylingdales and St Hedda’s brought as many children as they could for an hour of fun drills and activities.
The children were split into 10 teams, each ably led by Whitby Community College level two leaders and Community Basketball Coach Martin Roberts introduced skills-based activities.
Later in the afternoon, the two teams played each other to decide who would represent the smaller primary schools at the Sports Partnership Final and Fylingdales won.
In the second half of the afternoon, five larger schools battled it out for two places at the partnership final – West Cliff, Airy Hill, Stakesby, Ruswarp and Lythe.
All of the competitors played matches with great spirit and there was some close games.
Third place was taken by Ruswarp with nine points, second by Stakesby with 10 points and first were West Cliff with 11 points.
At the end of both competitions, sports co-ordinator Pete Woolley thanked the sports leaders from Whitby Community College, Martin Roberts and Whitby Leisure Centre.
It was also a great opportunity to remind students about the Whitby Wizards basketball club – further details on the website.
