Last weekend saw Whitby Community College athletes Dani Braithwaite and Becky Mills take on the cream of England’s cross country runners in the English Schools Cross Country Championships.
This national event took place in Nottingham at Wollaton Park.
The girls who qualified for the North Yorkshire team last month competed against 337 runners from 43 counties.
Dani, a member of Loftus and Whitby Running Club and Becky, a member of Scarborough AC, were in the intermediate girls event (year 10 and 11).
The challenging course covered a distance of 3.8km.
The race begins in tight pens and because Dani was fourth in the North Yorkshire championships this was her position in the pen, meaning the opportunity to get off to a good start was difficult.
This did not deter her and she ran fantastically well to finish in 37th position overall and first home for North Yorkshire.
Becky came home a little disappointed in 197th place after some frustrating months of disrupted training due to illness.
These talented girls now, together with senior athlete from the college, Grace Rodgers, look forward to a successful summer on the track - watch this space!
