BLEAK weather has almost wiped out the first week of Whitby’s spring angling festival.
The only day competitors have been out was on Tuesday, when Steve Hewitt landed the heaviest fish, a 4lb 4oz cod, which currently leads the race for the £1,000 jackpot.
This is in contrast to last week when, just three days before the festival began, Rich Cope caught a mammoth 56lb halibut, which was only 12oz shy of a port record for Whitby.
Paul Kilpatrick, chairman of Whitby Charter Skippers’ Association which organises the event, said: “We are looking to get out over the weekend but the forecast is changing all the time.”
Tuesday results: 1 Steve Hewitt, cod 4lb 4oz; 2 Andy Holmes cod 3lb 9oz; 3 Steve Hewitt, cod 3lb 5oz.
