ANGLER David Shay walked away with the £5,000 jackpot in the Whitby Charter Skippers’ Association’s summer angling festival.
David, of Doncaster, reeled in a 22lb 8.5oz cod midway through the annual competition and held on comfortably as fish sizes declined in the last few days due to the weather.
Danby’s Graham Guest (pictured above) scooped the second prize of £1,000 for his 18lb cod while Ian Thompson of Barnsley got third place with his 17lb 15oz cod, missing runners-up spot by a fraction.
Chairman of the charter skippers, Paul Kilpatrick, said the festival had been a success, despite Whitby being drenched by persistent rain over the past few weeks.
“We fished 20 out of the 23 days which was good considering the weather,” he said.
“The sponsorship has been excellent and it’s been a good competition to the end.”
The charter skippers are holding an RNLI charity boat angling match on Sunday (15 July) from 5pm to 8pm.
The entry fee payable on the day is £10 at the pontoon behind the car park by The Fleece pub on Church Street.
