Antix steals in at the death

A FRESH south westerly wind greeted the nine boats competing in the seventh race of the Whitby summer yachting series on Sunday, but being off the land, the sea was smooth.

Icon, BOB and Ace made the most of the start but No Compromise was well shy of the line and Antix hit the buoy although she exonerated herself by performing a 3600 turn.

Icon led the fleet round the first mark closely followed by class B boats, BOB and Cavalier, with the fastest boats, Antix and No Compromise at the back of the fleet.

Bullitt 2 quickly launched her spinnaker and rapidly gained on the leaders.

At the Bell Buoy, Icon held onto her lead before turning on to the beat to Sandsend.

It was a hard struggle against a fast-flowing flood and Icon was the first to tack in, hoping to escape from at least some of the tide.

Positions changed rapidly on the beat with No Compromise taking up her customary place at the front, and Antix just beating Icon.

In class B, BOB led them round and Bullitt 2 took advantage of a mistake by Cavalier, just overtaking her at the Sandsend buoy.

Again, the majority of the fleet decided to play safe and stuck with the white sails, but Bullitt 2 was bold enough to try her spinnaker again and streaked back to the Bell Buoy.

Bullitt gained ground on BOB with the class A leaders all still in close formation.

The race officer took pity on Class B and shortened the course to just one lap for which they were all very grateful, but Class A had to complete another. So BOB took line honours in Class B with Bullitt 2 not far behind.

Antix just overtook No Compromise on the final leg of lap one and Icon was comfortably following.

The wind freshened for the final lap and the crews were having to work hard, a little too hard for Ace who decided to call it a day.

Antix retained her lead to Sandsend, but No Compromise managed to get in front on the run back to the Bell Buoy.

However, on the final leg from the Bell Buoy to the West Pier and across the finish line, Antix managed to get her nose in front for a 20 second advantage at the finish.

Result: Class A: 1 Antix, John Allen, 2 Icon, Neil and Lorraine Williamson, 3 No Compromise, Derek Frank; Class B: 1 BOB, William Uppington and Andy Martland, 2 Bullitt 2, Matt Robinson, 3 Cavalier, Bernie Ratcliffe and Pauline Sellwood.
