ALTHOUGH Whitby suffered the wettest April on record, angler Mick Gibson didn’t complain too much.
He scooped the £1,000 jackpot in the spring angling festival with an 18lb ling but was probably thankful the weather wasn’t much better as it reduced the competition.
Mick is pictured here receiving his cheque for £1,000 for being the winner of the festival, which is run every year by the Whitby Charter Skippers’ Association (WCSA).
Chairman Paul Kilpatrick said: “The weather during the competition wasn’t good this year compared to last year when it was fabulous with just an odd day lost over the two weeks.
“All the same, when the lads did manage to get to sea in this year’s competition, the fishing was very good with plenty of cod being caught.
“Mick was fishing on Paul Eddon’s boat Trot On and is now £1,000 richer - he is one happy bunny.”
The association thanks the sponsors of the competition Andrew and Colin from the Station Inn, Whitby and Mike Clarkson from MC Electrical Service Ltd also from Whitby who both sponsored the first prize.
The big summer festival starts mid-June with £5,000 on offer to whoever catches the biggist fish caught. It’s not too late to get booked up - people can find a list of boats on the WCSA website.
