Lealholm Primary School are celebrating after making it through to the North area finals of this year’s Drax Cup, the biggest under 9s cricket competition in the country.
The school triumphed in a series of pool matches against Airy Hill, Oakridge, St Joseph’s and Pickering Junior held at The Recreation Club in Pickering last week to win the Ryedale & Whitby School Sports Partnership stage.
Lealholm and Oakridge were the strongest teams on the day and were neck and neck on points when heavy rain stopped play.
A toss of the coin to decide the overall winner went Lealholm’s way.
The win makes up for the school’s disappointment last year when it narrowly missed out on an area final place after losing to East Whitby Primary in a two-way play off.
Lealholm will now face teams from across the north region at Dunnington CC near York on Thursday June 18.
Shaun Hopper, school gamers organiser, said: “Lealholm are a very strong team and were unbeaten during the Whitby cluster event back in May.
“We wish them every success at the North area final next week and hope they can make it all the way to the final in Headingley in July.”
Almost 600 schools across Yorkshire and Teesside are registered for the 2015 Drax Cup.
Teams play in a series of events to produce four area winners from the North, South, East and West.
These teams will play the 2015 Drax Cup Finals at Headingley Cricket Ground on Friday July 10, prior to Yorkshire Vikings v Durham Jets in the NatWest T20 Blast.
The Drax Cup is sponsored by Drax and organised by The Yorkshire County Cricket Club in conjunction with The Yorkshire Cricket Board, The Yorkshire Cricket Foundation and The Yorkshire Schools’ Cricket Association.
